Yes, I think you do. And no, we don’t sell them and I don’t make a dime if you get one. But I like my customers alive. So if your home defense plan doesn’t include one, think about it. They’re not as expensive as you think. Here’s the one I bought and recommend: LINK
How did I come to the conclusion that I should get one? Well, my three little kids do not sleep in rooms adjacent to mine. In an emergency, I will likely have to go collect them. What would I like to have as I run across my house in the dark during an emergency, possibly with an intruder present? A high-capacity firearm and a bulletproof vest that takes half a second to put on.
Once you decide to get a vest, put it into your plan – and then PRACTICE YOUR PLAN. Doing this made me realize that I wanted to do some other things. First, I got a velcro patch that says my blood type on it and stuck it on my vest. In case I am found bleeding somewhere, I figure this would be good for first responders to know.
I know it sounds kinda psycho and extreme, but then again, is it that big of an intellectual leap from the thought process that led to keeping a firearm in my nightstand? If there’s a bad guy in the house, and I get shot or stabbed, how have my family’s survival odds changed? It’s scary, but you gotta think about it, no?
So I also bought some additional accessories to from the vest company BulletSafe and now I have holsters for my firearm and a knife attached to the front of the vest via molle in case I need to use both hands during the emergency.
What’s the best plan? Not my plan – I only share it as an easy and practical example of the capability and security I gained for a few dollars. The best plan is truly whatever works best for YOU. The bad guy breaking into your house has some advantages over you like surprise and maybe skill/experience; I encourage you to think any weird or unpleasant thoughts that might lead to you getting some advantages over him: those can include firepower, distance, armor, numbers, a coordinated plan, familiarity of space, nightvision, and more.
How many advantages over the bad guy do you need? Well it’s not unlike JP Morgan’s response when asked how much more money he really needed: “Just a little more.”
